Housing Voucher Recipient Fights Rent Hike to Stay in Central Coast

Due to her disabilities, Joni Gold was unable to work anymore and lived in Section 8 housing in San Luis Obispo County. To her surprise, she received a proposal of a rent increase by about 250% after submitting her annual recertification for her housing voucher. 

With CRLA’s assistance to lower her proposed rent, Joni can afford to continue living in her home of 20 years and avoided a possible eviction or other legal actions.

Civil Rights Groups Sue City of Sebastopol for Ordinance Aimed at Displacing Residents Living in Their Vehicles

ACLU Foundation of Northern California, Disability Rights Advocates, Legal Aid of Sonoma County, and California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. filed suit against the city of Sebastopol for enacting an ordinance that prohibits vehicles “used for human habitation” from parking anywhere within city limits during the day.

Judge Allows Unhoused Residents’ Civil Rights Lawsuit Against City of San Luis Obispo to Proceed

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA—Federal Judge Cormac J. Carney resoundingly rejected the City of San Luis Obispo’s motion to dismiss, allowing a case brought by unhoused residents and Hope’s Village SLO challenging the City’s pervasive and consistent practice of citing, fining, arresting, and moving unhoused people to move forward.

California Veteran’s Home Saved After Bankruptcy

Rhonda B. almost lost her San Joaquin County home when loan processors mishandled her mortgage after she filed for bankruptcy. Thanks to her persistence and with help from CRLA, Rhonda saved her family's home.
