Racial Discrimination Complaint Names CA State Water Board As Partly To Blame For Fertilizer Contamination In Central Coast Drinking Wells

Latino community groups in California's Central Coast region filed a Civil Rights Complaint with the U.S. EPA against the State Water Resources Control Board to address racially disproportionate impacts of water pollution from nitrogen fertilizers used by the agricultural industry.

Directing Attorney - RJU

Reporting to the Rural Justice Unit (RJU) Legal Director, the Watsonville Directing Attorney will lead a dynamic team of staff attorneys, community workers, and support staff to implement creative advocacy strategies to address community-identified issues affecting low income people communities. The Directing Attorney is responsible for developing the office's advocacy vision and tone and leading the office in delivering high-quality legal services commensurate with that vision. The Directing Attorney should have substantive experience in the RJU priority legal areas including housing, employment, health/public benefits, and education and is responsible for maintaining their caseload in addition to their leadership role.

Community Worker - CEI

The CEI Community Worker will be partnered with the local CEI Staff Attorney to develop and implement creative advocacy strategies to address community-identified environmental justice issues in Central Coast counties, particularly in DUCs. Responsibilities include community outreach and education, community leadership development, and implementing advocacy strategies to improve infrastructure, services, and investment in 5-6 DUCs.

Staff Attorney - Health Consumer Center

Reporting to the Managing Attorney, the Staff Attorney provides comprehensive legal services to eligible clients in CRLA priority areas in accordance with CRLA program guidelines, the ABA Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services, and the Code of Professional Responsibility. This position is funded through 12/31/2025, with the expectation that continued funding will be awarded.

Language Justice Initiative Associate

Reporting to the Language Justice Initiative (LJI) Manager, the LJI Associate will provide Spanish-English legal translation, coordinate language services, and support interpreting-related tech access for CRLA offices and programs across the state.

San Luis Obispo County Residents Clear Criminal Records with Help from CRLA and Local Partners

San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office, San Luis Obispo County Probation Department, San Luis Obispo Defenders, Restorative Partners, People’s Justice Project, California Rural Legal Assistance, and San Luis Obispo College of Law will host a free legal Clean Slate Clinic for San Luis Obispo County residents for criminal record expungement, felony reduction, and arrest record sealing on Friday, March 8, 2024.

Reporting to the Tenant Justice Project Supervising Litigation Attorney, the Supervising Attorney will lead the Shriver Project team, including supervision of community workers, in conjunction with the Shriver Project Program Coordinator. The Supervising Attorney will provide comprehensive legal services to eligible clients under the Shriver Project guidelines.
